The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has recently discussed the possibility of implementing tighter security checks for private aircraft. It was cited that in 2008 the number of terrorist threats had decreased due to higher security at commercial airports, forcing terrorism to look toward private jets and general aviation in order to carry out their plans.
However, the TSA has canceled its plans to upgrade security at 300 airports nationwide. This would have been very costly for the airport facilities, many of which are small airports in rural areas. The TSA received several complaint letters from the general aviation community stating that the risk of an act of terrorism on a managed private aircraft is very minimal; the dispatch and crew have steps in place to screen passengers and are very cautious about who boards the aircraft. For now, it looks like the security will remain in the hands of the operator, dispatch and crew.
